When the temperatures drop and snow begins to fall on the city of Fargo–Moorhead, something very cold, but also very special happens – the city transforms into its own winter wonderland. It’s the season for really warm drinks to try and cancel out the cold air, Christmas lights, and the kind of slow, cozy moments that make date nights feel extra meaningful. You could be planning a festive night out with your fiancé, looking for a romantic way to celebrate the holiday season, or simply looking for a fun activity on a winter weekend, the Fargo–Moorhead area offers opportunities to create some of those memories.
At The Pines, we know that a good winter romance can be just as special as any other season – so we’ve rounded up some winter date night ideas to inspire you and your special person. How does a classical holiday performance sound? Maybe a trip to see the fairground light show? Here are our great ways to embrace the season together.
There’s nothing more classic than gliding on an ice skating rink hand-in-hand on a Fargo winter night. Broadway Square transforms its grassy area into an ice rink every year, complete with string lights, Christmas music, and the perfect atmosphere for date night moments and candid photos. Whether you’re an experienced skater or a wobbly beginner, ice skating is n fun, lighthearted date that always ends with a good time.
If you’re looking for a simple but meaningful winter date, The Nutcracker downtown is always a good choice. It’s a holiday staple in Fargo–Moorhead, and the show is easy to enjoy whether you’re into ballet or not. The familiar music, the storyline, and the overall atmosphere make it feel like a true seasonal tradition. It’s also a fun reason to dress up a little, grab dinner before the show, and make a whole evening out of it. The Historic Fargo Theatre is having a few performances this weekend: tomorrow on Saturday, December 20 and Sunday, December 21 at 2:00 pm!
The Holiday Lights at the Fairgrounds is one of those easy, low-stress dates that still feels special. This date night idea is well-known to the Fargo-Moorhead area, and for good reason! You just drive through, look at the displays, and enjoy the moment together. No planning, no rushing – just a simple way to get into the holiday spirit with a loved one. Bring a blanket, play your favorite Christmas playlist, and maybe grab some treats for the drive. It’s relaxed, warm, and perfect for a night when you want something fun but laid-back. This is a great option if you want to avoid going out into the cold but still want to be apart of an outdoor winter activity!
For something a little different, dinner in an outdoor igloo is a great option. They’re warm, private, and just feel unique compared to a regular restaurant table. You get your own little space with a clear view of the snow and lights around you, which makes the night feel more festive and special. There are a couple different options for this in Fargo, you can look into Crave or 701 Eateries. Whichever one you end up choosing, igloo dining is a fun way to switch things up.
A sleigh ride sounds old-school, and honestly, that’s what makes it fun! You warm yourself underneath a blanket, ride through the park, and just enjoy being outside without having to walk around in the cold. It’s quiet, simple, and surprisingly relaxing. If you want to slow down and do something that’s very “winter” or “festive”, this is definitely THE date. Sometimes, it’s the simple things that really stand out as memorable experiences – there is not much thought that has to go into this or planning. You show up, make sure you pack warm, and enjoy the view.
Make Winter Memories that Last
Winter in Fargo–Moorhead doesn’t have to feel long and cold – there are a lot of small ways to make it enjoyable, especially with someone you care about. Trying new experiences together, even simple ones, can make the season feel a lot more fun. The winter months are known to drag on, so rather than look at it as a season you just want to get over with, stop and embrace the time that you’re in now! Make some memories that last a lot longer than a North Dakota winter, which is a pretty long time.
At The Pines, we love seeing couples make the most of each time of year, and winter is no exception. Pick a date idea, bundle up, and enjoy a night you’ll actually remember. We hope you try out some of these recommendations, and don’t forget to have a Merry Christmas!
